Ubuntu 19.04 Release Date, New Features and Everything Important Associated With It

This is a continually updated article about Ubuntu 19.04 Disco Dingo release date, new features and everything important associated with it.
Ubuntu 18.10 is released and it’s time to start looking for the upcoming Ubuntu 19.04.
As spotted by OMG Ubuntu, Ubuntu 19.04 will be called Disco Dingo. Since there is not much known about Ubuntu 19.04 features yet, let’s talk about this cheesy codename.

Ubuntu 19.04 Codename

Ubuntu 19.04 Disco Dingo
If you have read my earlier article about the Linux distributions’ naming trivia, you probably already know that each release of Ubuntu is codenamed with two words starting with the same letter. These letters are in the alphabetical order. So after Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic Beaver, you had Ubuntu 18.10 Cosmic Cuttlefish.
The first word is usually an adjective and the second word is a (usually endangered) species.
Disco is more of a noun than adjective but apparently, there are use cases where it could be used as an adjective.
Dingo is a type of dog native to Australia. It’s not an endangered species but at least it’s a real animal. If Ubuntu were going for a fancy name with fictional animals, Disco Dragon would have been a lot more fun in its own way.

Ubuntu 19.04 Release Date

Ubuntu 19.04 will be released on 18th April 2019. Here’s the official release schedule for Ubuntu 19.04 Disco Dingo:
  • Feature freeze: February 21, 2019
  • UI freeze: March 14, 2019
  • Kernel freeze: April 1, 2019
  • Beta release date: March 28, 2019
  • Final release date: April 18, 2019
Like all the non-LTS releases, Ubuntu 19.04 will follow a 26-week schedule and will be released on 18 April, 2019.
Have you ever noticed that a new Ubuntu version is released on Thursdays only?

What new features are coming to Ubuntu 19.04?

Since Ubuntu 19.04 is in early stages of development, there are not many confirmed feature changes. I’ll update this section as I get more news on the Ubuntu 19.04 features.
For the moment, have a look at the the confirmed, proposed and expected features in Ubuntu 19.04 Disco Dingo.

1. The default Yaru theme supports more applications

One of the main features of Ubuntu 18.10 was the shiny new default theme called Yaru. However, the theme didn’t support icons for a number of third-party applications. The regular icons of these applications didn’t blend with the rest of the theme.
Thankfully, Yaru is now extended and supports more third-party applications. As you can see in the image below, things look a lot prettier now:

2. GNOME 3.32 [Expected]

GNOME 3.32 will be released in March’19. I am guessing that Ubuntu 19.04 will be shipping with GNOME 3.32 and all the visual changes and features it provides.
One of the visual change you’ll notice is the new login screen in the GNOME 3.32. Expect the same login/lock screen in Ubuntu 19.04 as well.

GNOME 3.32 has some other visual changes lined up as well. For example, there will be no application menus anymore.
You can read about more changes in GNOME 3.32 here.

3. Android integration [Expected]

You have probably heard of KDEConnect. It’s an app that lets you manage your Android device from your desktop. With KDEConnect you can receive phone notifications on your desktop computer and reply to messages. Control desktop volume and music from your phone. Share files and links between your phone and the desktop.
It was developed by KDE team and naturally, it integrates very well with KDEdesktop.
Ubuntu 19.04 will have similar functionality with GSConnect. You may still achieve this today in Ubuntu 18.04 and 18.10 but you have to make additional efforts for that. 19.04 should have this feature by default.
You may expect better power management, better boot time with new compression algorithms, Linux kernel 5.0 among other things.
I’ll update this article when I learn about other new features in Ubuntu 19.04. If you stumble across some useful information in this regard, please send me a message through this page.
Meanwhile, why don’t you tell me what new features you would like to see in the upcoming Ubuntu 19.04 Disco Dingo.

13 Most Promising New Linux Distributions to Look Forward in 2019

There are distributions that will always make it to the top ten, whereas others may be in the list today and not at the end of next year. Another not so well-known feature of  Distrowatch  is a  waiting list  that consists of distributions: Not reviewed yet With missing or faulty components Without solid English documentation Projects that do not seem to be maintained anymore Some of the distributions that have not been reviewed yet may be worthy of consideration due to their great potential. Keep in mind that they may never make it to the front page ranking due to lack of time or  Distrowatch  resources to review them. For that reason, we will share a list of what we consider the  13  most promising new distros for  2019  and a brief review on each of them. Since the Linux ecosystem is a live being, you can expect this article to be updated from time to time, or perhaps be radically different next year. That said, let...

Ubuntu MATE 18.04 LTS Final Release

Charles Babbage wasn’t lying when he said “The only thing that would make my Difference Engine any better would be a modern customisable desktop environment that didn’t deviate from traditional desktop paradigms (unless I wanted it to.)” In a long lost diary entry Ada Lovelace scribbled “If only my code could be matched to an OS that had a perfect blend of usability and style accompanied by a handpicked selection of quality software packages.” ENIAC , moments before being unplugged in 1956, spat out a final message: “Give us a reboot when Ubuntu MATE 18.04 LTS is out will ya?” Dust off 20,000 vacuum tubes and check those 5,000,000 hand soldered joints because Ubuntu MATE 18.04 LTS is here and it’s time to power it up. MATE Desktop 1.20.1 inclusion alone is enough to make Babbage weep with joy but there is still more. Caja is primed to encrypt your secrets with GnuPG, and with bulk renaming built right in to the file manager you can finally deal with those pesky family r...
